Step-by-Step Guide (2026)
A US Chess ID is required only if your child plans to play in official US Chess–rated tournaments.This guide explains exactly how and when to get one.
Step 1: Confirm That Your Child Needs a US Chess ID
Your child needs a US Chess ID if:
They will participate in official rated tournaments
They want to receive an official US Chess rating
Your child does not need a US Chess ID for:
Regular chess classes
Casual or online play
Non-rated events
Step 2: Go to the Official US Chess Website
Visit the official US Chess Federation website and click “Join US Chess.”
This is the only official place to create a US Chess ID.
Step 3: Select “First-Time Member (New Player)”
Choose First-Time Member if:
Your child has never had a US Chess ID before
Step 4: Enter the Child’s Personal Information
Fill in the form using:
Child’s legal first and last name
Child’s date of birth
📌 This information becomes permanent and should match official documents.
Step 5: Use Parent Contact Information
Enter the parent’s email and phone number
This is standard practice for minors
One email address can be used per US Chess account
📌 Do not use a temporary or school email.
Step 6: Complete Optional Fields (If Applicable)
You may leave the following fields blank:
FIDE ID (unless your child already has one)
School name
Grade and graduation year
These fields do not affect membership or rating.
Step 7: Choose Communication P
references (Recommended)
To avoid spam but receive important updates, select:

✔️ Renewal Notices
✔️ The Key Newsletter (optional)
Uncheck marketing-related emails.
Step 8: Choose Membership Type
For most children, select:
✔️ Youth Membership
For players under 19
Required for rated tournaments
Step 9: Choose Membership Term
✔️ One-Year Membership (Recommended)
Best for first-time members
Easy to renew
Flexible as children grow
Step 10: Complete Payment
Pay online
Your child’s US Chess ID is issued immediately
Save the ID number for tournament registration
Important Notes for Parents
A US Chess ID is not required for lessons
Membership must be renewed annually
Tournament entry fees are separate
A US Chess ID does not guarantee tournament results or rating increases
